MORE THAN A CHARGEPOINT

Your EV can become part of your home-energy system.

An EV is often one of the largest new electrical loads added to a home. That makes the charger, incoming supply, household demand, solar generation, battery settings and tariff strategy worth considering together.

We assess the property as an electrical system rather than simply fixing a charger to the wall.

Three ways to charge

Car_process

Smart off-peak charging

Schedule charging into suitable lower-cost tariff windows rather than charging as soon as the car is plugged in.

EV charging new

Solar-assisted charging

With compatible equipment and sufficient surplus generation, some smart chargers can vary EV charging around available solar power.

solar-panel-battery

Solar + battery + EV

Coordinate the system so the battery and EV do what you actually want - for example avoiding unnecessary battery discharge into the car during a cheap overnight grid-charging window.

Important technical message

Do not claim every charger can directly 'charge from solar'. Solar-aware charging depends on the selected charger, metering/CT arrangement, minimum charging current, available surplus and overall system architecture.

DRIVE ON MORE OF YOUR OWN ENERGY

Already considering solar? Design the EV at the same time.

Solar panels and EV charging naturally complement each other, but the best setup depends on when the vehicle is at home and how much surplus solar is actually available.

For customers planning both, we can consider the solar array, battery capacity, charger, tariff and electrical infrastructure together from the start.

This is particularly valuable when a household is also planning a heat pump or other major electrical loads.

CHARGER SELECTION

We specify around the car, home and tariff.

There is no single best EV charger for every customer. We consider vehicle compatibility, tethered or untethered preference, smart-tariff requirements, solar integration, app experience, appearance, cable route, available supply capacity and future plans.

PROPER ELECTRICAL DESIGN

The charger is the visible bit. The design behind it matters more.

Before installation we consider the existing consumer unit, earthing arrangement, supply capacity, maximum demand, cable route, protective devices, charger location, communications and any solar/battery equipment already installed.

Where load management is required, the charger can be configured around the available electrical capacity rather than assuming the home can support unrestricted additional demand.

CHARGE WHEN IT MAKES SENSE

Make your electricity tariff part of the design.

Many EV owners choose tariffs with lower-cost charging periods. A compatible charger, vehicle and tariff can make scheduled or supplier-controlled charging considerably more convenient.

If the property also has battery storage, the system should be configured carefully so a cheap overnight EV charge does not unintentionally empty the home battery into the car.

EV CHARGER GRANTS

Some customers can still receive support.

From 1 April 2026, eligible renters and flat owners, residential landlords and households with qualifying on-street parking can access specific government EV chargepoint grants. The maximum support for the relevant residential schemes increased to £500 per socket and the current schemes are scheduled to run until 31 March 2027.

The Workplace Charging Scheme also currently provides eligible organisations with support of up to £500 per socket, subject to scheme rules.

Flats / landlords / on-street

Flats & renters

Where the customer has eligible off-street parking and permission, assess the cable route, metering/supply arrangement and current grant eligibility.

Residential landlords

Design single or multiple chargepoint installations around the property's supply and parking arrangement. Current government support is subject to landlord eligibility.

Homes without a driveway

Where a customer relies on on-street parking, discuss the practical installation route and current on-street charging grant requirements rather than promising a standard driveway solution.

ONE CONTRACTOR FOR THE ELECTRIFIED HOME

EV charging doesn't have to be a standalone job.

Switched On London combines EV charging with electrical contracting, MCS solar and battery storage and wider home-energy work.

That means customers planning solar panels, battery storage, EV charging, air conditioning or a heat pump can have the electrical infrastructure considered together rather than repeatedly adding isolated systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

Potentially, yes. With a compatible charger and suitable metering, charging can be adjusted around available surplus solar generation. How much solar reaches the car depends on generation, household demand, charger settings and when the vehicle is connected.
